At Kunjani Wines & Villas, every villa offers a retreat, and every bottle tells a story. Set in the heart of Stellenbosch, we blend luxury accommodation with world-class winemaking for an unforgettable experience. Founded by Paul Barth and Pia Watermeyer, Kunjani Villas & Wines is the story of a cross-continental love affair with wine, design, and hospitality.
The story of a cross-continental wine – a dream that took root. Paul Barth grew up in Germany’s Rheingau region, surrounded by Riesling vineyards, but his dream was to own a winery in South Africa, his second home. Pia Watermeyer, a successful South African businesswoman, shared this love for wine and hospitality.
A love story that became a winery, Paul and Pia met at a mutual friend’s wedding, where an instant connection formed – despite Paul’s limited English. Paul’s persistence and Pia’s infectious energy led them on a journey to find the perfect vineyard to call home. After searching, Pia knew Kunjani was the right fit; Paul needed a little more persuading. A walk through the vineyards sealed the decision—Kunjani Villas & Wines was born.
What “Kunjani” Means:
Kunjani is a warm Zulu greeting, meaning “Hi, how are you?”, capturing the estate’s welcoming spirit. to bring people together through great wine, meaningful connection, and shared experiences. Today, that spirit lives on in our self-catering luxury villas, which will include bed and breakfast from the 1st of November 2025, offering guests a relaxing and memorable stay in the heart of Stellenbosch.
Our Winemaking Philosophy:
Combining tradition and innovation, Kunjani produces wines that reflect the terroir of Stellenbosch while embracing modern techniques. Crafted with German precision and South African soul, each bottle tells a story of passion and dedication. Our wine portfolio includes award-winning reds, whites, and rosé, each carefully blended to create bold yet approachable flavours.
A Bold & Iconic Design:
A modern twist on Cape Dutch architecture, Kunjani’s charcoal exterior and red sliding screens draw inspiration from West African mud hut patterns, blending African and European aesthetics. As of 1 November 2025, the former tasting room and restaurant – originally designed with meticulous detail to showcase a contemporary take on South African winery design – have been transformed into self-catering luxury villas. While primarily self-catering, the offering will also include bed and breakfast, providing guests with a stylish and comfortable retreat in the heart of the Winelands.
Designed by Pia Watermeyer and Haldane Martin, Kunjani’s interior is as bold as its wines. Custom fittings, luxurious finishes, and unique furniture create a space that is both stylish and soulful. Artworks by renowned local artists Krisjan Rossouw and Peter Pharoah add a distinctly South African flair.
As of 1 November 2025, Kunjani’s former tasting room and restaurant will have been transformed into self-catering luxury villas. While primarily self-catering, the offering will also include bed and breakfast, providing guests with a stylish and comfortable retreat in the heart of the Winelands.
